Classroom Environment (E)

Standard E 1: Inclusive Environment
Teachers create an inclusive and caring environment in which each individual is respected and valued.

E 1.1 Positive Classroom Interactions

  • Use positive interactions with all students; show interest in students’ ideas, lives, and activities; enthusiastically support students’ initiatives; generously recognize a wide variety of student accomplishments.
  • Establish with students a caring, supportive, inclusive, challenging, democratic, and safe learning community in which individuals take intellectual, social, and emotional risks and work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Ensure that all students participate and succeed in learning, including students from groups that have been excluded historically or culturally from full participation in classrooms and who face continuing barriers to success.

E 1.2   Appropriate instructional Grouping

  • Match instructional grouping options to specific instructional purposes that take into account developmental, cultural and linguistic differences among students.
Standard E 2: Routines and Procedures
Teachers establish effective routines and procedures, maintain a safe and orderly environment, and manage transitions to maximize instructional time.

E 2.1 Classroom Organization

  • Arrange the physical space of the classroom to accommodate effective instruction.
  • Maintain safe, supportive, and interesting learning environments in which students participate in authentic content learning experiences and practices.

E 2.2 Classroom Routines and Procedures

  • Design and establish routines, procedures, and schedules that lead students to accomplish learning goals.
  • Create communities of learners in their classrooms that reflect the social nature of the learning process by structuring opportunities for students to share ideas, engage in peer review, and participate in spirited debate and argumentation
Standard E 3: Classroom Management
Teachers manage and monitor student behavior to maximize instructional time.

E 3.1 Effective Monitoring and Management of Behavior

  • Monitor students as they follow established routines and procedures.
  • Respond to potentially disruptive situations by appropriately adjusting instruction, groupings and/or strategies in a timely manner

E 3.2 Appropriate classroom interventions

  • Consult with peers, intervention specialists and other specialists, as needed, to design appropriate classroom intervention for students at Tier 2 of the Pyramid of Intervention.
