LETRS for Early Childhood Educators

Brief Description: The Early Childhood LETRS Supplemental Module provides quality professional development for early childhood educators interested in helping young children build a strong foundation in early literacy skills. The program provides descriptions of the development of language and literacy in ways that create a deeper understanding of these important processes while offering practical strategies for building these skills in young children.
Audience: Pre-K teachers
Evidence Base for Training:
Training is based on the recommendations of the National Institute of Child Health and Human
Development.(2000). Report of the National Reading Panel. Teaching children to read: An
evidence-based assessment of the scientific research literature on reading and its implications for reading instruction
(NIH Publication No. 00- 4769). Washington, DC: U.S. Government Printing Office.

Participant Outcomes:

  • Explore the importance of phonological processing, and the structures of language
  • Implement strategies to enhance phonological processing skills, awareness of print, and alphabet knowledge
  • Implement appropriate assessment strategies

Expected Student Achievement Outcomes:

  • Increased phonemic awareness and readiness for reading and phonics instruction
