Brief Description: With the adoption of the Common Core State
Standards by forty-seven states, schools and
districts are expressing a renewed interest
in standards-based instructional practice to
support the implementation of the standards.
Mayerson Academy began its work in standards-based
instruction in 1994. In 2010, the Academy
redesigned its professional development in the
area of the standards-based classroom so that
the training is completed within the context of
the Common Core State Standards.
In addition to training in the transition from
curriculum-based instructional practice to
standards-based instructional practice, the
Academy is also working with districts to
redesign their curriculum into a standards-based
curriculum.
Because standards-based instruction is not
merely a collection of instructional practices,
but an entire paradigm shift on the relationship
between standards, curriculum, and curricular
materials as well as the role of assessment
within this new paradigm, the Academy
works comprehensively in this area to support
classroom, building, and district implementation
of the common core standards.

Evidence Base for Training:
The Common Core State Standards have been
designed around an evidence-base in the following five key areas:
- Preparation: The standards are college-and
career-ready. They will help prepare students
with the knowledge and skills they need to
succeed in education and training after high
school.
- Competition: The standards are internationally
benchmarked. Common standards will help ensure
that students are globally competitive.
- Equity: The expectations are consistent for all –
and not dependent on a student’s zip code.
- Clarity: The standards are focused, coherent,
and clear. Clearer standards help students (and parents and teachers) understand what is
expected of them.
- Collaboration: The standards create a foundation
to work collaboratively across states and districts,
pooling resources and expertise, to create
curricular tools, professional development,
common assessments and other materials.
