Standards-based Instruction within the Common Core
Print Friendly Version (Click Here)

Brief Description: With the adoption of the Common Core State Standards by forty-seven states, schools and districts are expressing a renewed interest in standards-based instructional practice to support the implementation of the standards. Mayerson Academy began its work in standards-based instruction in 1994. In 2010, the Academy redesigned its professional development in the area of the standards-based classroom so that the training is completed within the context of the Common Core State Standards.

In addition to training in the transition from curriculum-based instructional practice to standards-based instructional practice, the Academy is also working with districts to redesign their curriculum into a standards-based curriculum.

Because standards-based instruction is not merely a collection of instructional practices, but an entire paradigm shift on the relationship between standards, curriculum, and curricular materials as well as the role of assessment within this new paradigm, the Academy works comprehensively in this area to support classroom, building, and district implementation of the common core standards.

Audience: K-12 Teachers and Administrators

Evidence Base for Training:
The Common Core State Standards have been designed around an evidence-base in the following five key areas:

  1. Preparation: The standards are college-and career-ready. They will help prepare students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in education and training after high school.
  2. Competition: The standards are internationally benchmarked. Common standards will help ensure that students are globally competitive.
  3. Equity: The expectations are consistent for all – and not dependent on a student’s zip code.
  4. Clarity: The standards are focused, coherent, and clear. Clearer standards help students (and parents and teachers) understand what is expected of them.
  5. Collaboration: The standards create a foundation to work collaboratively across states and districts, pooling resources and expertise, to create curricular tools, professional development, common assessments and other materials.

Participant Outcomes:

  • Recognize the rationale for standards-based performance assessments
  • Design standards-based performance assessments
  • Develop strategies to determine what students know and are able to do
  • Outline the roles of the teachers, principals, and district leaders in standards implementation
  • Design a plan for effective collaboration to support this transition
  • Identify reporting methods that reflect valid and reliable student achievement results
  • Remove barriers and resistance that may exist as it relates to standards-based instructional practice
  • Transition into a standards-based instructional delivery model

Expected Student Achievement Outcomes:
  • Increased student engagement in the learning process
  • Increased student accountability for learning
  • Improved critical thinking skills
  • Increased levels of learner autonomy in the learning process
  • Heightened levels of learning coupled with deeper levels of understanding
  • Improved student achievement as measured through state assessments
