Kagan Cooperative Learning is all about engagement!

“I want my students engaged in what we are learning.
I want them to do really well on state tests.
I want them to like the subject and work with each other.
I want them to learn – really learn and remember.
But their scores are low and they seemed bored in class.
I am getting frustrated!
What am I doing wrong?  What can I do to change?”

How is Cincinnati Public Schools implementing Kagan Cooperative Learning?

There are many teaching and learning strategies that can be used by teachers. But one teaching strategy that CPS is embracing is Kagen Cooperative Learning: Structures for Active Engagement.  As soon as cooperative learning is mentioned, some teachers get frightened – they are afraid of losing control.  When, in actuality, Cooperative Learning simply provides many structures (tools) for teaching.  It gives students an opportunity to work collaboratively, learn faster, have greater retention, and feel more positive about the learning experience.  When well planned, cooperative learning groups provide the time for all students to shine! Everyone has a specific task, everyone must be involved in the learning, and everyone learns interpersonal life-skills.

In 2008 Cohort 1 schools-Mt. Washington, Roberts, Quebec Heights, and a 9th grade team at Aiken College and Career-began their training and journey in implementing Kagan cooperative Learning. In July 2009, the principals and selected teachers continued their learning by attending coaching training at the Kagan institute in Florida with a national consultant.

In May 2009, Carson, Douglass, Roll Hill and Winton Montessori were chosen as Cohort 2 schools to begin their Kagan Training. The staffs received their week long Kagan training in May.   Principals attended two trainings this July – Leading a Cooperative School and Cooperative Learning Meetings.

In May 2010, the following schools were chosen as members of cohort 3: AMIS, Cheviot, Hartwell, and Rockdale.

The Cooperative Learning Expert Cadre members have been chosen and their extensive training began in July.  There are stringent requirements from the National Kagan Cooperative Learning Corporation for becoming a school coach and district trainer.  Cadre members provide coaching and training to the existing schools staff.  We are building capacity so we can provide training and follow up coaching to CPS teachers.   The interest in learning cooperative structures continues in CPS!
