In partnership with Mt. St. Joseph, Mayerson Academy is hosting the annual IRead Conference, August 16-18, 2010. The major area of focus will be on the newly revised DIBELS reading assessment with break-out sessions for K-2 and 3-6 educators on all the new DIBELS measures. Dr. Stephanie Stollar from Dynamic Measurement Group, the developer of the widely-used DIBELS reading assessment, will provide a special trainer-of-trainers session which will enable schools/districts to send a teacher/psychologist who already uses DIBELS to become trained in how to train others in the new DIBELS assessment instruments. A second area of focus will be on the use of DIBELs data to plan intervention.

Mayerson Academy Announces a New Expert Cadre in the Area of Second Language Acquisition

In its continuing work with the Cincinnati City School District, the Mayerson Academy is now training an expert cadre of district teachers who will serve as trainers and presenters at district workshops and professional development days.  This is the latest of a series of expert cadres designed and trained by the Academy to meet the professional development needs of the district in a way that is targeted to district needs as well as more cost-effective than hiring outside consultants to conduct the training of district staff.  Gwen Walton and Ed Green, two professional development specialists at the Academy, will be working with this new cadre over the next six months, training them in specific theory and pedagogy related to second language acquisition, adult learning principles, and presentation skills.  This is one of several ways that professional development specialists at the Academy work with districts to build internal capacity in schools systems to improve the achievement outcomes for students.

Members of this expert cadre come from the foreign language, bilingual education, and English as a second language teaching staff in Cincinnati Public Schools.  Geniene Delahunty, Maria Hidalgo, Isabel Hopp, Patrick McCarthy, Tina Oancea, Alison Palassis, Natasha Taylor, and Susan Underwood were selected as members of the cadre in a joint effort between members of the Office of Second Language Acquisition for Cincinnati Public Schools and Mayerson Academy staff.

Mayerson Academy Partnership with Southwestern College

The Mayerson Academy for Human Resource Development is engaged in a two-year partnership with Southwestern College to provide training focused on designing a learner-centered instructional environment to support improved achievement for students in the college system.  The overall themes of this work include adult learning principles and the natural human learning cycle, with particular attention to instructional practice that is tailored to the needs of the learner within this paradigm. The second session focused on the second stage of the human learning cycle—exploration with specific emphasis on instructional practice using college texts in a way that promotes greater student engagement and a deeper understanding of the concepts being studied.

Southwestern College is a six campus system throughout Ohio and Kentucky that offers degree programs in the areas of Medical Assisting, Medical Administrative Assistant/Coding and Billing, Phlebotomy, Criminal Justice, Business Management, Network Communications/ Information Systems, and Massage Therapy. Southwestern hires the most highly qualified professionals in their fields to provide instruction to their students. Mayerson Academy is partnering with Southwestern College to refine the instructional practice of its professors as it relates to teaching adult learners.

Expert Cadre in Co-Teaching

The Mayerson Academy is forming a new cadre of educators who will serve as regional experts in the area of co-teaching.  Members of this expert cadre are teachers (current and/or retired) who will be deeply and thoroughly trained as a team (Regular Education Teacher with an Intervention Specialist) in the area of co-teaching.  The cadre team will receive ongoing support and training and will serve as trainers for other teachers and principals.  The team will also develop training materials to be used when they provide professional development.  In addition to workshops, the cadre will also provide follow-up coaching to teachers and principals upon request.
