The Positive Classroom - New Initiative
Mayerson Academy is working with national consultants through VIA to develop the Positive Classroom as an enhancement of the effective Positive School Culture program. The new initiative focuses on character strengths to foster a positive classroom and school climate. The initial work helps teachers and paraprofessionals identify their strengths and then moves to helping them learn how to identify and use the character strengths of their students to promote an effective climate for learning.

Two elementary schools, Rothenberg and Carson, are serving as pilot schools for this first year of the program. The initial training for the schools’ PSC teams was January 7, 2012.  On Saturday, February 4, the entire staff from both schools participated in the second phase of the training, Positive School Culture: A Strength-Based Approach.  The focus is the impact of individual character strengths on culture in the classroom.

The participants left the training feeling more motivated to make a difference in the lives of their students as stated in the following testimonials:

  • “The course affirmed for me the power of values.  Like the saying – give a fish, you feed for a day; teach to fish, you feed for a lifetime.”
  •  “I learned about character strengths and how each teacher’s individual strengths make a difference in learning.”
  • “I will implement my character strength results and newly acquired knowledge to continue to make my work environment a pleasant and fun learning one.”
  • “Character is just as important as content learning.”
  • “To strengthen student’s character and confidence.”

To bring home the point,  LeighAndria Young, a senior at the School for Creative and Performing Arts  and a literary scholar, was invited to read one of her many literary works that details the discovery of her inner self.  The literary work is entitled 6:58PM.  The audience was mesmerized, not only by her talent, but by the insightful message that came about because of her experiences with CPS teachers.  Please watch the video of LeighAndria and see if you are not taken in by her literary gift.

JASON Project Science Regional Convention – an inspiring event

JASON Project Science Regional Convention took place January 26-28, 2012 at Mayerson Academy. Over 125 educators from six states engaged in challenging science experiences and curriculum.  Three renowned scientists – Tim Samaras, Shirley Murillo, and Kobie Boykins – shared their stories, passion, and research.  Teachers were energized at the end of the workshop. Each participant received books and curriculum for their chosen area of study. Upon return to the classroom on Monday, students were able to participate in free curriculum, activities, games, and science research.   One 7th -8th grade teacher wrote:  “I have all of my 7 and 8th graders on Jason.org.  They love it. Thanks for the conference and I look forward to another one this summer.”  Thanks to all who participated and the JASON Project trainers and presenters for a wonderful experience.

Supporting Standards-based Instruction in the Common Core Standards

With the adoption of the common core state standards by forty-two states, schools and districts are expressing a renewed interest in standards-based instructional practice to support the implementation of the standards.  Mayerson Academy began its work in standards-based instruction in 1994.  Over the past year, the Academy has focused on redesigning its professional development in the area of the standards-based classroom within the context of the common core standards.

In addition to training in the transition from curriculum-based instructional practice to standards-based instructional practice, the Academy is also working with districts to redesign their curriculum into a standards-based curriculum.  Because standards-based instruction is not merely a collection of instructional practices, but an entire paradigm shift on the relationship between standards, curriculum, and curricular materials as well as the role of assessment within this new paradigm, the Academy works comprehensively in this area to support classroom, building, and district implementation of the common core standards.

For more information on this area of professional development, contact Edward Green at 513.478.5551 or at green.ed@mayersonacademy.org.

New Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Reading Card Deck

Mayerson Academy’s Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Reading Card Deck is an ideal sound deck for both student use and teacher training. It provides a complete deck of sounds, concepts, spelling rules, and selected common prefixes and suffixes for use with students. The sounds for each phonogram are listed on the back of the card with example words and explanation. The concept cards are an excellent tool that allows students to practice essential language concepts and spelling rules by filling in missing words. The cards also list common spellings for the same sound. All information is in an easily readable font size.

Designed for Mayerson Academy by Star Mierenfeld, a nationally certified Orton-Gillingham Instructor, the deck has a total of 185 cards (4.25” x 5.5”) and comes with a numerical listing of all cards with a notation indicating in which position they would occur in the blending drill.
