11th Annual TESOL Conference- Saturday May 5, 2012

In partnership with the University of Cincinnati’s Literacy and Second Language Studies Graduate Student Association, Mayerson Academy is proud to host the Ohio Kentucky Indiana (OKI) Regional TESOL Conference-now in its 11th year.  This year’s theme, “Academic Vocabulary-Building the Bridge to the Core Curriculum” focuses on the need to develop critical vocabulary in English learners so that they may demonstrate conceptual understanding more effectively.  Lack of academic vocabulary often serves as a gatekeeper, preventing these learners from expressing their conceptual understanding in a way that can be readily assessed.

This year’s keynote speaker, Dr. Luciana C. de Oliveira, is Associate Professor of Literacy and Language Education and Director of the English Language Learning (ELL) licensure program in the Dept of Curriculum & Instruction at Purdue University. She has over 20 years of teaching experience at various levels, including in secondary and university ESL programs. Dr. de Oliveira’s research focuses on issues related to teaching English language learners(ELLs) at the K-12 level, including the role of language in learning the content areas and teacher preparation for ELLs. Her book, Knowing and Writing School History: The Language of Students: Expository Writing and Teachers’ Expectations (2011), received the David E. Eskey Award for Curriculum Innovation from California TESOL (CATESOL). She is the 2012 recipient of the Early Career Award for the Bilingual Education Research Special Interest Group of the American Educational Research Association (AERA).  Click here to download the registration form.

Mayerson Academy Goes Global
Mayerson Academy has now expanded its client base to include international clients.  Currently, a consultant from the Academy, C. Edward Green, is providing professional development to teachers in the Liuzhou School District in the Guangxi province of the People’s Republic of China.  This work came about at the conclusion of a cultural exchange last spring when officials from the district made a visit to the Academy and surrounding schools to learn about American educational practices and, specifically, the work that the Academy does to train teachers.
During this first visit, Ed is training 120 teachers over a four week period and then providing follow-up support for two weeks in the classroom to support the implementation of the work completed in the training.  The Academy is supporting the Liuzhou School District in the transition from a traditional, teacher-centered classroom to a student-centered, active learning environment.  This is currently a national initiative of the People’s Republic of China; it is also an area of extensive work at the Academy.  Specific modules of the training protocol include the research base that
informs student-centered learning, active learning protocols, brain-based instructional practices, assessment for learning, standards-based instruction, the role of teacher expectations in student performance, and instructional planning within this new paradigm.

Mayerson Academy provides observation for implementation of CVMI

Mayerson Academy has contracted with the Vermont Math Institute evaluators to provide training in the use of Diagnostic Classroom Observation (DCO), the system used to evaluate the implementation of CVMI.

This system was developed to paint a picture of classroom teaching practices and student engagement and learning. The DCO system consists of four components: lesson planning and organization, lesson implementation, lesson content, and classroom culture.

Local program evaluators will be trained in the use of this tool on September 26 and 27, 2011.

Mayerson Academy receives grant from United Way of Greater Cincinnati

The United Way of Greater Cincinnati has funded a grant for Mayerson Academy to bring Dr. Joyce Epstein from the National Network of Partnership Schools (NNPS) at John Hopkins University  to Cincinnati for a two-day institute on School/Family/Community Engagement.  Resource coordinators from the Cincinnati Public Schools will be trained on September 23rd in the NNPS model for family and community engagement.  On Saturday, September 24, action teams comprised of the principal, resource coordinator, teachers, parents, and community members will be trained on the research-based components of family and community involvement in the school.  The result will be that each team will draft a one-year Action Plan for Partnerships linked to school improvement plans and goals for students.
Mayerson Academy Receives Grant from Dater Foundation to Support Multisensory Reading Instruction

The Dater Foundation has awarded another grant to the Mayerson Academy to support multisensory reading instruction. This grant will help to fund the tutoring portion of a practicum in Orton-Gillingham multisensory teaching methods for teachers from the Greater Cincinnati Area. Practicum hours will be at Pleasant Ridge Montessori Elementary School, Cincinnati in June, and in Norwood Schools in July. Thirty students from Pleasant Ridge Montessori and 30 students from Norwood Schools, ages 7 to 13 years who are struggling readers, will receive one-to-one direct reading instruction. Sixty teachers from Cincinnati urban districts will learn the best, scientifically proven, methods for teaching struggling readers how to read, write and spell. The classroom students of the teachers who successfully complete the course will benefit from their teachers' increased knowledge of the structure of the English language and preferred methods of language instruction. Participants will receive six follow-up tutoring visits from their instructors during the fall of 2011. These visits will help the teachers organize their classrooms, group their students and plan and deliver multisensory lessons for their students.

Mayerson Academy Expands Its Work in Early Childhood to Two New Clients

Mayerson Academy has recently contracted with both the University of Washington DC and Norwood City Schools to provide training in LETRS for Early Childhood Educators this summer. This two-day workshop provides research based professional development for Preschool-First Grade educators interested in helping young children build a strong foundation in early literacy skills. Participants learn how to plan developmentally appropriate, engaging, and scientifically-based activities that lay a foundation for higher level comprehension by enriching the child's vocabulary, listening, and oral language skills. The workshop is followed by three hours of in-class modeling and coaching this fall to assist educators in implementing these strategies.

Mayerson Academy Receives Smale Grant for Orton-Gillingham Training

The Mayerson Academy has received a generous grant from the Smale Family Foundation to help fund Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Reading training in the 2011-2012 school year.

The Orton-Gillingham teacher-training course, which benefits both area teachers and children, will be offered twice during this summer. Approximately 60 teachers and children will be enrolled in the June and July programs. The children will be tutored at Pleasant Ridge Montessori Elementary School, a Cincinnati Public School and Williams Elementary, a Norwood City School. All teacher-participants receive follow-up support from their master teacher during the fall to assist them with implementing the multisensory strategies in their own classrooms.

The grant will also fund a new component to the program – an online connector. Mayerson Academy would like to enhance teachers’ ability to connect with other teachers using Orton-Gillingham as well as with the master teachers. Blackboard technology will provide an additional platform for establishing ongoing connections, forming a professional community among Orton-Gillingham practitioners, and sharing resources such as current articles, lesson plans, and instructional resources. With Smale Grant funding, Mayerson Academy will create and implement an “Orton-Gillingham Connector” via Blackboard. The Connector will be moderated by one or more of our Orton-Gillingham Master Teachers and be open to all practitioners who have taken the Mayerson Academy course.

Through the Science of Reading Partnership between Mayerson Academy and the College of Mount St. Joseph teachers may get graduate credit and count this course toward a reading endorsement/master’s degree in the science of reading at reduced tuition.

For more information about Orton-Gillingham and/or the Science of Reading Partnership, contact Sonia Milrod, Literacy Professional Development Specialist, Mayerson Academy, at 513.475.4145 or milrod.sonia@mayersonacademy.org.

The Dater Foundation awarded the Mayerson Academy a grant of $20,000 to help support the summer Multi-sensory Reading Program, better known as Orton Gillingham training.  This training will be offered twice this summer:  June 1—June 24 and July 6—July 29.  The grant will enable the Academy to support the in-classroom implementation component of the training with follow-up visits from master teachers to the classrooms of the teachers taking the training this summer. Teachers who took the training in 2009 were very positive about receiving assistance once they returned to their classrooms.. Anti-bullying Institute 2010

The Mayerson Academy, in partnership with D.I.S.C.O. and Xavier University, is hosting a two day anti-bullying institute on June 17-18 at the Academy.   From the first day of the institute, all participants will emerge with a stronger knowledge base related to bullying in the K-12 school setting. While possessing a strong knowledge-base related to bullying and what types of situations are more conducive to bullying is a critical first step, knowledge alone is not sufficient to combat bullying. As such, the second primary objective of the first training day is for participants to emerge with enhanced tools to take action to prevent bullying. Finally, all content and experiential activities from the first training day have been specifically designed to prepare participants to maximize the benefit of the 90 minute workshops to be offered on day two.  On the second day of the institute, participants will choose from a variety of breakout sessions that speak to specific issues presented from the first day of the institute such as working with parents, teen dating violence, cyber-bullying, relational aggression, and bully-proofing your classroom.  For registration information, click here.

Diversity Institute 2010

The second annual Mayerson Academy Diversity Institute will be held at the Academy on Thursday, June 3, 2010 from 8:30am-3:30pm.  This year’s theme is “A Diverse Universe Begins at School.”  Our keynote speaker, Stephen Peters, has served on panels as an education expert with U.S. Secretary of Education, Dr. Rod Paige in Washington, D.C.  He has also been featured on television programs such as “America, America” and “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”  Mr. Stephen Peters offers strategies and approaches that will affirm and validate teaching effectiveness in the classroom.  Participants will learn how effective relationship building with children is fundamental for student and school success.  Mr. Peters will give three specific steps that will engage students in the learning process.  The participant will come away with a better understanding of why we are dealing with the type of student we’re dealing with as well as, specific strategies to engage ALL learners. Mr. Peters will provide a framework for reshaping school culture, affording teachers and students an opportunity to become part of the solution collaboratively, instead of remaining part of the problem separately.

After the keynote presentation, a student panel discussion will explore issues relevant to diversity from their perspectives.  Finally, in the afternoon, there will be breakout sessions on understanding the culture of poverty, understanding personal biases, courageous conversations about race, and integrating sheltered instruction into an inclusive environment.
