Mayerson Academy offers Orton Gillingham, multi-sensory reading training, for all classroom teachers. This practicum course provides an introduction to the philosophy and the teaching techniques involved in an Orton Gillingham approach for teaching reading, writing and spelling, including both content of lessons and method of delivery. Teachers receive instruction in the components needed in an Orton Gillingham lesson and the opportunity to plan and teach lessons under the supervision of an experienced Orton Gillingham practitioner. They learn the basic phonetic structure of the English language, which includes sound/symbol associations; multiple spelling possibilities; rules for adding suffixes, syllable patterns, syllable division and spelling generalizations. Opportunities for implementation are provided daily as participants tutor children, putting into practice the knowledge they are gaining from the course.
