New Assistant Principals’ Focus Group
Assistant Principals new to Cincinnati Public Schools have been invited to attend a monthly focus group. The participants selected topics based on their needs. Resource speakers meet with the group for the first hour of the session. The second hour is open discussion and problem solving with an emphasis on collegial support. The group is facilitated by Joycelyn Senter, Assistant Principal Withrow University High School, and John Copenhaver, Assistant Principal Roll Hill Academy. Eric Thomas, Principal Aiken College and Career High School, is an advisor to the group.
Cincinnati Public Schools Central Office Professional Development Planning Committee
The Central Office Professional Development Planning Committee is chaired by Kelly Broscheid, Office of the Treasurer/Grants. The committee has begun to explore new avenues for enhancing the knowledge and skills of central office administrators. One program initiated by the group is the pairing of each central office administrator with a school. This is designed to break down the separation from central office to the school sites and to give central office based administrators an opportunity to interact with staff and students in the field. New relationships and new sharing of talents are evolving. The committee has also assessed needs, and topics of interest have been established. Resource speakers and classes are planned accordingly.
The Cincinnatus Mentoring Program
The Cincinnatus mentoring program has been developed in coordination with the Mayerson Academy and Cincinnati Public Schools. Leaders and principals from these organizations as well as others are invited to participate. The program is designed to foster mentoring relationships between business leaders and principals so that each will have a deeper understanding of the other’s organization and leadership role. These relationships will be based on mutual respect for each other’s knowledge and experience, and trust that shared information will be confidential. The minimum program participation is one year.
The program is coordinated by Kent Friel, Cincinnatus Education Panel Chair; Jane Keller, President CYC and Cincinnatus Education Panel Member; and Melody Dacey, Mayerson Academy and Cincinnatus Education Panel Member. SREB Leadership Modules on-line project:
The South Regional Education Board (SREB) Leadership Program supports the goal of improved school leadership for student performance through research and development of training modules. Cincinnati Public Schools (CPS), in conjunction with the University of Cincinnati and the Mayerson Academy, has been selected to pilot a program that creates hybrid courses from these modules for principals and assistant principals. Courses using the modules are designed by teams of CPS principals and UC professors who customize the content to the needs of an urban district. Eight on-line modules were developed in 2008-09 and the seven remaining will be completed in 2009-1010. The ongoing availability of these offerings on-line will provide opportunities for differentiation and individual choice. The project has been supported by a Wallace Foundation SAELP Grant.
Module content has also been used for various leadership professional development programs for principals. assistant principals, central office administrators and lead teachers. |
