Learning Teams are work groups of teachers by grade or grade band who meet regularly (minimally twice each month) to solve instructional problems. They use a seven-step protocol to determine student needs based on data, develop outcomes for lessons based on student needs, develop lessons, teach, critique each other and reflect collaboratively on the effectiveness of the lesson, analyze student work, and reassess the lesson. The focus is working collaboratively as a team of teachers to systematically improve teaching. Research suggests that when implemented and supported well, Learning Teams provide a practical and effective form of professional development, one that engages teachers in the process of studying and improving their teaching and its observable and measurable effects on student learning.
