logo_orton_gillinghamMayerson Academy’s Multisensory Reading program is accredited for its “Teaching” and “Instructor of Teaching” levels by the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC); the program also meets the knowledge and practice standards of the International Dyslexia Association.

Mayerson Academy’s Orton-Gillingham courses address the five essential components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension as recommended by the National Reading Panel Report. Instruction includes the phonology, orthography, morphology and history, syntax and semantics of the English language. Participants learn the fundamentals of the Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching reading, writing and spelling using an explicit, sequential, structured language approach with multisensory methodology providing maximum opportunities for reinforcement and engagement.

A key component of Mayerson Academy’s program is that, under the guidance and supervision of master teachers, teachers design and implement explicit, systematic and structured multisensory lesson plans custom-tailored to the needs of individual students or small groups. What makes the Academy’s Orton-Gillingham course unique is that through on-site coaching, Master Teachers assist each participant in implementing Orton-Gillingham methodology to strengthen their core reading programs (Tier I), provide remediation in small groups (Tier II), and/or provide intensive remediation to individuals (Tier III).

To achieve Certification at the Teaching Level through Mayerson Academy’s IMSLEC-Accredited program, educators must successfully complete the following:

  1. RDG 591 Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Reading Practicum 1
  2. Either LETRS Modules 4, 5, 6 and 9; RDG 540 Fluency and Comprehension; or RDG 532 Advanced Multisensory Language
  3. RDG 593 Advanced Multisensory Reading Practicum – a nine-month practicum during which course participants document 60 hours of Orton-Gillingham lessons with samples of student work.

Orton-Gillingham courses are part of Mayerson Academy’s Science of Reading Partnership program with the Mt. St. Joseph University but each course may be taken for contact hours rather than college credit.
