Professional Development Standards

Needs (Why are we doing this?)

  • A needs assessment is conducted to determine the need for professional development.
  • Professional development is aligned to district’s strategic plan and/or school’s OnePlan.
  • Evaluations of previous related professional development efforts are used in the needs assessment.  

Context (How are we doing it?)

  • Professional development includes a variety of learning experiences.
  • Activities follow a logical sequence of experience.
  • Activities are interactive.
  • Materials are easily read and professional looking.
  • Presenter is engaging, enthusiastic, and clear in the presentation.
  • Professional development addresses the application of the knowledge and skills learned.
  • Follow-up is provided to support the application of knowledge and skill.
  • Professional development is differentiated to meet the needs of its participants.
  • Professional development includes practice, reflection, and monitoring of implementation.  

Content (What are we doing?)

  • Clear outcomes for the professional development are established to meet the identified needs.
  • Professional development activities are aligned to the outcomes expected.
  • Professional development is designed to impact student achievement.
  • Professional development is based on past evidence of success.
  • Professional development is collegial and collaborative.
  • Professional development accommodates the disabilities of participants.  

Evaluation (How do we know how effective it was?)

  • Professional development is evaluated against the outcomes defined.
  • Professional development is evaluated by assessing participants’ response and their perceived level of learning.
  • Professional development is evaluated by monitoring the quality of implementation of the outcomes expected.
  • Professional development is evaluated by determining its impact on student achievement.
  • Formative assessments are used to evaluate professional development so that mid-course corrections can be made.
