Mayerson Academy’s Orton-Gillingham

Why is this work important?

Based on the NAEP Reading Report Card (2017), 63% of fourth grade students fell below the proficient level on a national assessment. Designed for pre-K–6 classroom teachers, K–12 intervention specialists, and tutors of those with dyslexia or reading difficulties, Mayerson Academy’s Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Reading Program courses address the development of the foundational skills necessary for students to become proficient readers. With coaching and supervision from master teachers, participants learn to design and implement explicit, systematic and structured multisensory lesson plans custom-tailored to the needs of individual students or small groups.

How do we go about it?

Offered in both face-to-face and online formats, Mayerson Academy’s Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Reading Program addresses the five essential components of reading – phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension – as recommended by the National Reading Panel Report (2000). What differentiates Mayerson Academy’s Orton-Gillingham courses is the practicum. Master teachers provide on-the-spot feedback, correction and suggestions as they watch teachers teach. The goal is for each participant to implement Orton-Gillingham methodology with fidelity to strengthen core reading instruction. Our programs are accredited by the International Dyslexia Association (IDA) and/or the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC).

What results will you see?

Thanks to more than two decades of work in the field, our instructors are established as recognized leaders in literacy, equipping teachers to develop students’ capacity to become successful readers and writers. When educators engage in training over time at a deeper level, impact on student achievement is exceptional. Teachers who conscientiously implement Orton-Gillingham methodology recognize student learning that transforms struggling learners into confident, successful readers. An outside evaluator from the Ohio Department of Education’s Dyslexia Pilot rated Mayerson Academy’s program “exemplary professional development” due to the significant reading gains of students.
