Educators taking Mayerson Academy’s Orton-Gillingham training are seeing great results and talking about the program’s impact.

Principal Monica Battle, College Hill Fundamental Academy

“I saw the results immediately!” said Monica Battle, principal of College Hill, referring to gains eight of her teachers’ students are making on progress monitoring tests. What has made this difference? These eight teachers are all participating in Mayerson Academy’s IMSLEC and IDA accredited* Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Reading Program.

Mayerson Academy offers two summer face-to-face courses – one in June and one in July – and an online course which begins in August. Course dates and registration information can be found here.

Ann Boyles, 2nd grade teacher at St Francis de Sales says,

Orton-Gillingham has helped me refocus how I teach phonics reading and writing. OG has shown me a logical approach to sounds and order to reviewing and incorporating other skills … I am using Orton already. During IOWA testing I saw OG kids using fingerspelling when they had to listen and identify sound placement in words! I plan to take Practicum II in the fall to further my knowledge. I’m hooked.

Mayerson Academy’s Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Reading Program addresses the five essential components of reading—phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension—as recommended by the National Reading Panel Report (2000). Participants learn the fundamentals of the Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching reading, writing and spelling using an explicit, structured language approach with multisensory methodology providing maximum opportunities for reinforcement and engagement. Teachers learn to design and implement explicit, systematic and structured multisensory lesson plans custom-tailored to the needs of individual students or small groups.

The effectiveness of Mayerson’s program has been long documented. Dr. Julie Morrison, external evaluator of Ohio Department of Education’s Dyslexia Pilot program identified Cincinnati Public Schools’ Dyslexia Pilot Project as the strongest model featuring

extensive coaching through the Mayerson Academy’s Orton-Gillingham Multisensory Reading (Practicum I & II), providing the content and the process for equipping teachers to meet students’ literacy needs.

As Dr. Morrison stated, what makes the Academy’s Orton-Gillingham courses uniquely effective is the practicum, comprising 12 coaching sessions in Practicum I and 6 additional sessions in Practicum II. In face-to-face courses, Master Teachers provide on-site coaching while in online courses, the same intensely individualized practicum experience is provided through the edthena.com platform whereby Master Teachers provide on-the-spot feedback, correction. The goal is for each participant to implement Orton-Gillingham methodology with fidelity to strengthen their core reading programs (Tier I), provide remediation in small groups (Tier II), and/or provide intensive remediation to individuals (Tier III).

* Mayerson Academy’s face-to-face program is accredited by the International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council and the International Dyslexia Association (IDA). The Academy’s online program is the only entirely online stand-alone multisensory structured language course accredited by the IDA (IMSLEC is working on a process for accrediting online courses).
