A Simple Tool for Leaders to Activate Strengths

Labor Day / A Simple Tool for Leaders to Activate Strengths

Increased engagement, greater job satisfaction, enhanced creativity, improved collaboration

A simple tool can help you get started!

If these are outcomes you want for your employees and your organization, you are not alone.  In our work at MA, we have been helping leaders translate these intentions into action, resulting in cultures that expand performance and well-being. To begin, we look to the words and work of Martin Seligman (frequently referred to as the founder of positive psychology) who has said,

“Character strengths are the building blocks for well-being.”

In organizations across the US and beyond, we have seen that catalyzing our own character strengths and building a culture where others can do the same, make it possible to transform organizational life and organizational outcomes.

But it can be hard to know where to begin.  We frequently start with the challenges of leadership and how we can bring the best within ourselves to bear on those challenges.

To help leaders take a first step,  we have created a simple tool that combines character strengths with the enduring wisdom found in The Leadership Challenge, first written in 1987 and now in its sixth edition, after being identified as one of the 100 Best Business Books of All Time.

In a few minutes with the tool, you can learn how to develop extraordinary leadership based on strengths, such as using:

  • HONESTY to Model the Way
  • SENSE OF MEANING to Inspire a Shared Vision
  • CREATIVITY to Challenge the Process
  • HUMILITY to Enable Others to Act
  • BRAVERY to Encourage the Heart

Give it a try here.  Simply use the arrows on the bottom of the screen to see all 24 strengths, or click on individual leadership elements or strengths for a more personalized view. (If you haven’t already, you can take the VIA Survey here to identify your personal character strengths)

I would love to know what you think.  Feel free to respond in the comments below or via email darwish.jillian@mayersonacademy.org
