Thriving Learning Communities™

Why is this work important?

Imagine schools where learners of all ages thrive. Positive learning environments are critical to student success, catalyzing high engagement and high performance. We know this is not the experience for all students, but we can change that.

Thriving Learning Communities™ (TLC) is a unique, research-based approach to improving students’ social and emotional competencies (SEL) through the lens of character strengths. As students come to understand their unique strengths and build SEL competencies, research shows that engagement, learning and performance all increase.

How do we go about it?

The TLC Champions Institute launches school teams on the exciting journey to transform their learning cultures. In the three-day Institute a small group of leaders join other school teams to build knowledge, skills, and confidence to effectively implement the Thriving Learning Communities program.

Champions return to their schools ready to help their colleagues infuse the language of strengths into their daily curriculum while promoting development of the core components of social and emotional learning (SEL). Students use a strengths lens to ground their understanding of self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship building and responsible decision-making. Champions are supported during implementation with online resources and virtual coaching.

What results will you see?

Sustained TLC implementation with fidelity has shown to have had positive impact, resulting in:

  • student engagement increases in 3 out of 4 measures;
  • classrooms with improved attendance, GPA, and higher test scores; and
  • schools with improved attendance and GPA, decreased disciplinary referrals and higher test scores.
